Less Is More

Thank author of this post/comment

About a year ago, I started downsizing in the hopes that I will have lesser expenses. But more than the economic values of downsizing, I have learned that by actually living on lesser material things, I am enjoying life more.

No more car to drive around town means more time to spend with the family. I enjoyed traveling on public transports more because I have lots of time to talk with friends and relatives, something I can't focus on when I'm driving. It also means more walking sessions in the morning for a better health.

Less computer hours means more work and more sleep. Since I started regulating my hours spent in front of the computer, primarily to reduce electricity bills, I noticed a better work output and longer sleeping hours. I actually had my regular home internet subscription cut and replaced it with pay-per-use internet. From 18 hours of continuous computer activities, I managed to bring it down to at least 3 hours a day.

Lesser appliances means more space. If you know me, you'll know that I love wide spaces more than anyone else. That's why I prefer houses with large windows, veranda/terraces, observatory, glass walls, and large backyard lawns. My living room is always unusually big, with high ceilings. I color them white for wider space effect. Fences are always grill-types and never high concrete. And with less appliances, I can move better around the house.

Less internet, more book reading. Not that I can't read books in the internet, but I have so many books in my library that were stacked up but were never read. Now my unread books are down to about 30 or less from more than 70 last year.
