We all have our favorite cartoon characters during our childhood. My mother said hers was Casper, the friendly ghost mine was Wolverine for the X-man. Cartoons have really had big changes comparing those from the past to present. I remember watching LoonyToons where themes are mildly violent compared to the cartoons these days. Kids today watch things like Ben10 which is about fighting and destroying alien enemies. The colorful characteristics of these shows makes them more appealing to children but are they really good for them.

There have been studies pointing that these shows will not do anything good for children. SpongeBob SquarePants went recently under fire when a study pointed out that watching the show causes children to have short term attention and learning problems especially with children 4-year of age.

The study took in 60 children that were randomly assigned to either watch SpongeBob, or other slower paced cartoon, or draw pictures instead. After nine minutes, the kids were given mental function tests. The results were alarming because those who watched SpongeBob scored considerably lower compared to other groups.

In a different test which aims to measure self control and impulsiveness of kids, SpongeBob kids was also rated lower compared to the other two group. Kids were rated on how long they could wait before they give in with a treat presented by a researcher when left the room. The SpongeBob group waited an average of 1/2 minutes while the other two groups averaged at least 4 minutes.

The creators of SpongeBob thinks the study was unfair. They say the show didn't target 4 year-olds but children from 6 to 11 year-olds. They also question the methodologies with the study which they claim couldn’t be trusted by parents.

This study may not provide clear information about the relation of watching cartoons and how it affects a child’s behavior but what is important is that parents have to make sure that they know their kids are watching and if it’s really good for them. TV show and movies do have age categories and parents should be aware of this and don’t let their kids watch show which are not appropriate.
